Former Northwestern Hotel
211-213 Qunicy St |
Built in 1886, the Northwestern Hotel was the
only first class hotel in Hancock until the Scott Hotel at IO 1 E. Quincy (See #19) opened
in 1906. At this writing, the Northwestern is slated to be tom down.
Designed by a leading local architect and builder, Byron H.
Pierce, the hotel featured 50 rooms, some with balconies supported by ornamental brackets.
It advertised steam heat, electric lights, and bathrooms with hot and cold water. Floors
are divided by a course of decorative, smooth sandstone blocks each with an eight-petal
rosette. The facade of the building is crowned with an ornamental pressed metal cornice.
