Historic Masonic Temple
228 Hancock St |
This 2-story brick building was the home of the
Quincy Lodge of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, established in Hancock in 1861, and
the Hancock chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Of Italian Renaissance style, with its prominent flat roof-line
and symmetrical facade, this building replaced one destroyed by fire in 1929. The
elaborate doorway is topped by an arch with a decorative keystone. Below the arch is the
Freemasonry Master Mason symbol. The "G" stands for the Grand Architect of the
Universe (God) and the square and compass (symbols of the tools and practices of the
building professions) represent morality and spirituality. The cornucopia and leaves are
also Masonic symbols. Notice the decorative basket-weave brick below each window arch. |
