13 Finnish American Heritage Center

In 1990, Suomi College renovated the former St. 'Joseph's Catholic Church as a Finnish cultural center. The renovation reflects traditional Finnish architectural styles including the clipped gable roof, the stucco finish and the extensive use of trim moldings painted white. The fixed upper sash with mullions of the narrow casement windows form a cross. Vertical trim casing extends down past the horizontal apron. The blue roof and white walls not only reflect Finnish colors (the same as those in the flag of Finland), but also introduce bright colors to the mostly dark red block of the downtown.
The building currently houses a gallery, a performing arts center and the Finnish archives.
