Modern Style Office Building
400 Qunicy St |
Despite its cool,
geometric dominance which contrasts with the warm hues and ornate decoration of much of
Hancock, the home office of D&N Bank has integral ties to the city's history.
As D&N grew from small rented space in the First National Bank (101 - 103 Quincy) to
the stylish 1939 Art Deco building (200 Quincy), and finally to this imposing edifice,
D&N has mirrored the westward growth of Hancock. The glass walled, eight-story office
building, finished in 1972, is served by the copper-clad cylindrical tower which houses
lobby space, elevators, and stairways. The photographic murals in the lobby depict the
role copper has played in Hancock's history.
Architectural features such as concave
comers on the first floor serve as visual relief while circular seating and rectangular
planters pick up the geometric theme of the building. The gold-tinted glass walls of the
office space reflect the surrounding landscape. The architect was Maurice B. Allen, Jr.,
of Tarapata MacMahon-Paulsen Corporation of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
