10 City Hall
399 Qunicy St

City Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was designed by the firm of Charlton, Gilbert, and Demar. It was built in 1898-99 of evenly coursed, rock-faced Jacobsville sandstone at a cost of $15,000. The eclectic design has a Flemish influence and Gothic details as well as Roman Ionic columns. The scrolled and stepped-end gable frames a wide-arched window. The original clock tower rose 90 feet, featured a conical roof and spire, and was surmounted by an open wooden belfry. Other external changes include an addition on the west side and a modem fire engine door.
The building at one time housed the jail and is still used as the city hall, fire and police station. Until the tower clock was electrified, it was manually wound by firemen.
