1888 Bank Building
101-103 Qunicy St |
The First National Bank
building, designed by Byron H. Pierce and built in 1888 as a two-story structure, was
skillfully enlarged in 1903 by Charles Archibald Pearce with the addition of a third floor
and 40 feet on the north side. The building has decorative terra-cotta window linters and
trim and a bracketed, hammered copper cornice. In 1903 the structure was considered one of
the finest buildings in the city. This edifice also housed other prominent businesses such
as the Hancock sandstone Land Company, the Hancock Consolidated Mining Company and the
Northern Michigan Building & Loan Association (now D&N Bank).
With its comer entrance, the structure was specifically designed
for its location as the entrance to "main street" Hancock.
