Suomi College Spins Story Of St. Urho

The annual pageantry celebrating St. Urho’s Day, in commemoration of the ridding of the grasshopper pestilence in Finland, was observed Thursday, March 16th , at Suomi College’s Finnish-American Center in Hancock.

To tell of the legend, Professor Dan Maki, spinner of the story, arrives on-stage (well, sort of), to begin the narrative.

Master of Ceremony Phyliss McIntyre (L) begins to interview Prof. Maki about the heroic deeds of St. Urho and friends.

As Prof. Maki continues the intriguing tale of St. Urho’s exploits, accompanied by Suomi College’s Music Director Melvin Kangas, Prof. McIntyre greets a newcomer to the tale, SISU the Clown. (far L).

McIntyre, and one of the infamous grasshoppers (Becky Weeks), dance in what can only be described as a "Finnish grasshopper hop".

But the jig is up, as our hero (Jeff Crumbaugh) arrives on-scene to banish the frisky little creature. And so, for at least another year, Finland (and Hancock) is safe from the grasshoppers. (applause).
