2007 Houghton County Fair
The Houghton County Fair Grounds were alive with activity in August, with the annual Fair activities from August 23-26.

Thursday was Youth Horse Show & Poultry /Rabbit Show Day, with the Miss Teen Houghton County Pageant in the evening. Seven young ladies vied for the honor this year. Named early on as Miss Congeniality, was Genevieve (Genny) Gierke, of Chassell. Later, following the talent & interview period, Second Runner Up was Hailey Ohtonen, of Hancock, with First Runner Up Katie Zutter, of Houghton. Named Teen Queen, was Genny Gierke. M/C was Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean.

Also on Thursday, as a Main Event, were the Motocross Races.

Friday was the Senior Citizen Day, with a lunch and bandstand activities.

The Ruth E. Best Homemaker of the Year Award went to Ruth Best herself (L), this year.

Among the many activities on Friday, was the Swine Show & Market Steer Show.

Many fine animals were shown this year in the Dairy & Beef Show, as seen here. Also Friday was the Small Animal Silent Auction and Sheep/Goat Show.

Evening brought the Farm Tractor Pull Event, here, Howard Junkin on his way to earning a ribbon.

Saturday was Horseshoe Tournament Day, with officials from the Cities of Hancock and Houghton facing off. (Hancock won, by the way).

The Draft Horse Halter Show and Draft Horse Pull was also held, as one contestant & his team try their luck.

The week also saw the Antique Tractor/Implement Show, getting larger every year.

The Fair Midway was busy on Saturday, a big day at the Fair, in great weather this year.

One of the Fair’s daily midway shows this year was the Grizzly Falls Welde Bear Shows. This should give an idea of how large these bears can get.

Saturday evening, in a prelude to the Main Event, is the Veterans Program, this year, the South Range V.F.W., & Hancock American Legion Post 186 Color Guard, show the crowd not only how to properly fold an American Flag, but it’s meaning.

The highlight for the night is the always popular Monster Truck & Megasaurus Show, here, one of the huge vehicles owned & driven by a female driver.z
