The Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) is improving its transmission line service to the Copper Country. As a part of that upgrade, new cross-Waterway lines are being strung from the west end of Hancock, to the hillside west of Houghton. Here, a reel handling machine slowly pays out a new line over the top of the Hancock tower.

This view show the Houghton side tower, and the new lines being strung across the Waterway. UPPCO has been working on new transmission facility upgrades throughout 2007, including work at local substations.

While the drought conditions this summer brought problems for area farmers, some gardeners found the conditions helped, such as Tom Neher, with a 1.75 # tomato (in right hand), and a 1.5 # tomato (in his left hand).

Local Fire Departments converged on the Hancock Housing Hi-Rise Manor in September, in a simulated emergency evacuation. Hancock VFD’s Aerial ladder truck is on the left, and Houghton VFD’s Aerial Ladder truck is on the right. Early October saw the arrival of the MV Canadian Transport, carrying the first of two shiploads of salt for the up coming winter season, here approaching the City of Hancock. A second load arrived several days later.

The 26,000 tons of salt will be used by the State of Michigan, County Road Commissions, and Municipal road crews in the Western U.P. to reduce ice and snow on highways and trunk lines. The ships unload in West Hancock.

On a foggy October Day, the Matt Laitala Pavilion at the Hancock Beach and Recreation Area, is about to get a roof update.
