Finlandia University & MTU SmartZone Dedicate Portage Campus
The dedication of the former Portage View Hospital building, now under Finlandia University ownership, was held Friday, Sept. 23rd, 2005. Four of the available nine floors have been rebuilt and renovated for occupancy so far.

Finlandia Univ. President, Dr. Robert Ubbelohde, welcomes everyone and gives opening remarks. The official new name ... the Lily I. Juttila Center for Global Design and Business, (CGDB). Funding included an estate bequest from the Lily I. Juttila estate, private donations, and grants from the Economic Development Assoc., and the Michigan Economic Development Corp., amounting to nearly $2.5 Million.

Alan West, Director of the Michigan Tech Smart Zone (SZ) (hi-tech business incubator effort), gives an overview of what the third Smart Zone location will mean. Other SZ locations are in Houghton's old Power House, and at the MTU Advanced Technology Development Center, recently opened as well. (West, who helped bring the effort to its current level, will be leaving before the end of year).

MTU President, Dr. Glenn Mroz, presents MTU's hopes for continuing expansion and development of the Smart Zone hi-tech enterprise concept. The area Smart Zone hi-tech business incubator plan, is a collaborative effort between Michigan Tech, Finlandia Univ., and the Cities of Hancock & Houghton, through a representative Board of all entities.

Michigan State Representative Rich Brown also addressed the crowd. Rep. Brown has been instrumental in providing funding for the Finlandia remodeling, and the Smart Zone concept and funding. He also has been active in securing grants, or, funding, for many Western U.P. needs, including Police and Fire needs, including the our local area.
