Finnish Ambassador is Main Commencement Speaker
Finland's Ambassador to the U.S., His Excellency Jukka Valtassaari, arrived in the Copper Country on Saturday afternoon, May 30, 2005, to be the main speaker at Finlandia University's Commencement on Sunday.

His Excellency (L), along with President Ubbelohde, is introduced to Michigan Technological University (MTU) President Glenn Mroz ( R ), (who had conducted MTU Commencements earlier in the day).

Inside the Heritage Hall, the Ambassador meets with Hancock City Council members, Administrators, & spouses, to discuss items of common interest (Hancock's Sister City is Porvoo, Finland).

Finlandia University granted two Honorary Doctorate Degrees in 2005, the first to the Reverend Antti A. Lepisto (President of the ELCA Suomi Special Interest Conference).

The second Honorary Doctorate was bestowed upon His Excellency Ambassador Jukka Valtassaari (L). He accompanied the President of Finland in the 2003 visit to Hancock, and in addition, has had one of his sons receive a Masters in Chemical Engineering from MTU.. (The son now works for Nokia Corp). The City of Hancock wishes the Best for all of our area University Graduates. KUDOS.
