2005 Bridgefest Celebration
The 18th annual Bridgefest Celebration was an unqualified success, with more events, larger crowds, and superb weather. Originally starting as the Houghton Rotary Seafood Fest, the weekend event has mushroomed into what is now known as Bridgefest, with Seafood Fest as the primary anchor. Temperature at parade start - 68 degrees.

A new Coast Guard Cutter, the CGC Alder, courses the Portage Lake Lift Bridge on October 13, 2004, shortly after being commissioned in Duluth, MN, her home port. WLB216, was launched Feb. 7, 2004, at Marinette Marine Shipyard. At 225 ft. in length, and a beam of 46 ft, she is larger than the buoy tender class she is replacing.

Friday evening's parade was led by the Bridgefest Color Guard, from Alfred Erickson Post 186 American Legion, of Hancock. Commander was Russ Whittiker, 3rd from left, (behind).

Saturday morning brought the annual fishing derby on the Hancock waterfront.

Participants in the Keweenaw Chaindrive Festival come off the Portage Lake Lift Bridge (after a start in Houghton) and loop around onto Navy St.. They will continue west to M203 and Cemetery Hill, and the Maasto Hihto/Churning Rapids 16 & 32 km. cross country courses. Over 300 entries from all over the Midwest competed in the two day event. Saturday afternoon was Senior Citizen Day in Hancock, at Porvoo Park, on the waterfront, with food and live music.

With great weather for the weekend, the Seniors enjoyed themselves and renewed old friendships and acquaintances The event is put on and sponsored by the Hancock Housing Commission.

The Battle of the Bands at the Ramada Inn in Hancock, next to the Bridge. This crowd will really swell as we get into the evening hours. Lots of food and refreshments.

Also at the Ramada Inn, on Sunday, was the Jet Ski Tournament and Competition.

And throughout Bridgefest was the Houghton Rotary Seafood Fest at Kestner Park, in Houghton, with nearly continuous music during the days, and evenings, as well as numerous exhibitor and display booths along the waterfront. Also available was the Copper Country Homecoming Photo Exhibition at the Dee Stadium (Houghton waterfront), which will be open at no charge, until the end of September. Thousands of archive photos to see, of former Copper Country life and times. Join us next year on Father's Day weekend, for 2006 Bridgefest. See you there!
